Project Overview

R K Electrical Services was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive electrical overhaul for a home extension and new kitchen installation in Birmingham. The project involved both upgrading the existing electrical infrastructure and installing new systems to support a modern kitchen and living space.

This work was carried out in accordance with current UK electrical standards including BS 7671, ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance throughout.

Client Objectives

  • Provide safe, efficient, and compliant electrical systems for a new kitchen extension.

  • Upgrade outdated wiring and consumer unit to meet modern load requirements.

  • Incorporate additional circuits suitable for high-power kitchen appliances.

Scope of Work

1. Design and Planning

R K Electrical Services conducted a detailed assessment and design phase to plan the electrical layout for the extended kitchen space. This included load calculations, circuit design, and strategic placement of sockets, appliances, and lighting to accommodate the clients’ needs.

2. Sorting Out Existing Wiring

Before new installations, all existing wiring was reviewed and brought up to standard where necessary. Any outdated or unsafe wiring was addressed to ensure a robust foundation for the new system.

3. Running New Cabling

New cabling was installed for lighting, power outlets, and fixed appliances. All cable runs were carefully routed to maintain neatness, accessibility, and compliance with safety regulations.

4. Installation of Additional Circuits

Dedicated circuits were installed for an induction hob and a 16 amp oven. These high-demand appliances required new circuit protection and capacity to operate safely and efficiently within the kitchen design.

5. Fittings and Fixtures

A full suite of new outlets, switches, and lighting was installed. This included modern fire-rated downlights and contemporary drop lights, enhancing both the function and aesthetic of the new kitchen space.

6. Consumer Unit Upgrade

The existing consumer unit was replaced with a new consumer unit with metal enclosure for fire protection; including RCBO breakers for electric shock risk, overload or short circuit; and surge protection device to protect electrical systems and equipment from sudden, short-duration increases in voltage caused by lightning strikes, power grid switching, or faults in the supply network, - complying with current British Standards (BS 7671:2018).
